Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) comes with many benefits - lower running costs, cleaner driving, and the chance to be part of a greener future. Yet, according to a recent survey by Cox Automotive, misconceptions are stopping some drivers from making the most of their EVs.
For example, 25% of EV drivers believe you cannot charge an EV in the rain. In reality, EVs are designed with safety in mind, and weather conditions like rain don’t prevent charging. Avoiding charging in wet conditions could mean missing out on nearly half of your potential charging days; unnecessarily limiting your vehicle’s convenience.
Other common myths include:
- Batteries only last 2 years - Most EVs come with battery warranties around eight years, and proper care ensures long-lasting performance.
- EVs must be charged fully every night - Manufacturers typically recommend charging to around 80%, preserving battery health while still providing ample range.
- EVs are more likely to catch fire than petrol or diesel cars - EVs have advanced battery and thermal management systems, making them no more at risk than conventional vehicles.
Despite these misunderstandings, the survey showed that 95% of EV drivers would choose an electric car again, demonstrating strong confidence in the technology once the facts are known.
